The trick to background noise reduction is two-fold. Experiment around with your mic to find the optimal setting. If you spread out your hand as much as possible and stick your pinky on the pop filter then your mouth should touch your thumb. The optimum distance for a condenser mic is as follows. Get a pop filter (seriously, they are cheap as hell and help so much). Get a shock mount for it, especially if you are mounting to your desk. The trick is to use good mic technique to reduce background noise (along with a noise gate). The AT2020 is a condenser mic, which means it has great frequency response but is also very sensitive.
